Can I really use polyester thread?
We’ve always been told to never use a polyester thread if we are using cotton fabric because the strength of the polyester thread may tear the cotton fibres.
The truth is that under normal use a polyester thread will not tear cotton fibre. However, a strong, glazed cotton thread may, under heavy use, tear the cotton fibre in a quilt. It is best to avoid glazed threads whenever possible. If the thread feels stiff and wiry it most likely is glazed even if it is not marked as such on the label. Stay away from nylon threads that will become brittle and discolour over time.
Whether you are making a quilt that you know will be much loved and much used or a work of art to hang on your wall don’t follow the old traditions of having to use just cotton thread. Instead, base your thread choice on quality, feel and appearance.
